EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES RESOLUTION ASKING ALL MEMBER COUNTRIES TO SPONSOR A MOTION AT THE UNITED NATIONS FOR A UNIVERSAL MORATORIUM ON CAPITAL PUNISHMENT AND URGES A STAY OF EXECUTION OF MUMIA ABU-JAMAL
Strasbourg, June 16, 1995. The European Parliament unanimously voted for a resolution asking the European Council, the European Community and all member states to do everything possible to have the United Nations General Assembly pass a resolution on the universal abolition of capital punishment during its 50th plenary session. This resolution would be the first step towards THE total abolition of the death penalty.
The initiative was introduced into the European Parliament by European Parliament Reformers Marco Pannella and Gianfranco Dell'Alba, both members of the Transnational Radical Party.
In the same resolution, the European Parliament urged that the United States renounce enforcement of the death penalty, specifically requesting that Governor Ridge of Pennsylvania post-pone the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal and permit a retrial of his case.
