EP: Resolution on the Death Penalty and the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal
Strasbourg, June 16, 1995
The European Parliament,
A. considering the sentencing to death of Mumia Abu-Jamal, pronounced December 1982;
B. considering that the Governor Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania signed the order for execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal for August 17, 1995
C. taking into account the appeals of numerous people, of human rights organizations, of unions and other organizations worldwide which are fighting to save the life of Abu-Jamal;
D. considering that the State authorities of Pennsylvania must respond to the suspension of the execution of Abu-Jamal quickly;
1. asks Governor Ridge for a stay of execution for Abu-Jamal and allow a retrial of his case.
2. reaffirms its absolute opposition to the death penalty and deplores that such a penalty continues to be applied in numerous states in the world where for some time the number of capital executions has been growing;
3. asks again that all the States in the United States which have the death penalty, renounce, it application.
4. asks European Council, the European Community, and member states to do everything possible so that a universal moratorium on capital punishment as a first step towards the total abolition of the death penalty is introduced into the United Nations General Assembly, during its 50th plenary session.
5. assigns the President of European Parliament to transmit this resolution to the European Council, European Community, the United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros Ghali, United States Governors, United States President William Clinton and Pennsylvania Governor Ridge.
