Dear Friends,

Allow me a moment to bring to your attention a seriuos situation concerning an inmate on death row in the state of Pennsylvania, USA. This man, Mumia Abu-Jamal, was a black journalist in Philadelphia whose articles exposed the terrible racial and ethnic discrimination that still pervades American society. Mumia was present when a black man was beaten by a city police official; while at the scene, the policeman was shot. Mumia was arrested and charged with the murder. He was denied his rights for a fair trial and was given the death sentence.

Last week the Governor of Pennsylvania signed the Death Warrant for the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal which is scheduled to be carried out by lethal injection on August 17, 1995. We are concerned that important pieces of evidence which point to Mumia's innocence have not been pursued or investigated. There is, therefore, the possibility that on August 17 an innocent man may be executed.

There is also the bigger issue at stake. Currently there are 189 people on Death Row in the state of Pennsylvania. Blacks represent only 9% of the state's population but account for 60% of those on Death Row. There are more such figures just as alarming. Is there not reason for a broader international concern?

We urgently need your help in appealing to the Governor of Pennsylvania for a new trial for this man. Please take action right away, because time is running out for Mumia.
