Brussels, December 5, 1995
Honourable Member of Parliament,
in sending you our warmest wishes for Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year, we would like to draw your attention on three urgent initiatives which - with your support and that of your colleagues from over 30 parliaments all over the world - could become very important events.
The first initiative concerns the question of Tibet, in particular the necessity for the Tibetan tragedy to be dealt with also by the United Nations as soon as possible. To this end we submit to your signature an Appeal asking the UN Secretary General Butros Butros Ghali to receive as soon as possible the Dalai Lama in order to define with him "the possible steps of an initiative which allows to restore the international right and legality violated in Tibet".
The second initiative deals with the Chinese question and the necessity to support those that in that country are engaged in a nonviolent fight for the establishment of democracy. Within this framework, and in cooperation with "Home of Chinese Democracy" friends, we are promoting the candidacy of the famous dissident Wei Jingsheng for the Nobel Peace Prize 1996. This is about a particularly urgent initiative since Wei has again been arrested and risks the capital punishment, but also, and more precisely, because the deadline for the candidacy to the Nobel Prize expires in the middle of January.
Finally, the third initiative concerns the support for a Cuban citizen, member of the transnational and transdivisional Radical Party: Francisco Chaviano, convicted to 15 years of jail after an unfair trial. Chaviano, President of the Cuban National Counsel for Civil Rights, has been imprisoned in the jail of Punto del Este, near Havana, for more than a year in precarious health conditions. You can support his cause by sending the enclosed postcard to President Castro.
Her we have three initiatives, easy in undertaking (they basically require only three signatures), that, on the other hand, could mean the difference between life and life of rights instead of death and oppression, hope instead of desperation, for these individuals and the peoples to which they belong, in addition to all those who dream and work for a world with more justice, rights and democracy.
Together with the hope to have you as a member of the transnational and transdivisional Radical Party, we beg you, Honourable Member of Parliament, to extend our wishes for a Happy New Year to your family and those who are close to you.
Danilo Quinto Olivier Dupuis
(Treasurer) (Secretary)
