LESS THAN TWO MONTHS BEFORE MARCH 10TH
Only two months, more precisely 57 days, remain until the Brussels Demonstration day, which has been convened by the European Parliament's Tibet Intergroup, the European Tibet Support Groups, the Tibetan communities within Europe, and the transnational and transdivisional Radical Party. This demonstration will serve as a fundamental meeting in order to launch in the coming months a large campaign among citizens, political forces, and governments all over the world for the freedom of Tibet.
Good news has begun to arrive from all of Europe, wherever the national Coordinations have been established.
Good news is also arriving from our campaign asking the European mayors to fly the Tibetan national flag on their respective townhalls, as well as from our appeal to Boutros Ghali that he meet with the Dalai Lama as soon as possible.
The hope that the joint action of all of us, of all those who participated in the Strasbourg seminar and of all those who have since joined, will give the results we are hoping for, is real and concrete. However, in these last weeks it will be necessary to intensify our efforts to be even more numerous than we hoped in Brussels on March 10th, a day of celebration and political hope for the Tibetan people.
Wishing you the best of luck in all your efforts, please feel free to offer any suggestions that you feel might improve this newsletter, and please inform us of your plans for March 10th.
THE PARISH OF EPPINGEN WILL FLY THE TIBETAN FLAG ON THE 10TH OF MARCH
From Germany we received various letters of interest and support for the initiatives on Tibet. The Eppingen parish has therefore decided to fly the Tibetan flag outside the church. Other German citizens announced in their letters their participation in the Brussels demonstration, as well as their readiness to urge the mayors of their respective cities to sign the appeal and fly the Tibetan flag.
PARTICIPATION IN THE MARCH 10TH DEMONSTRATION
Over 20 members of the "Save Tibet" TSG in Vienna have already announced their participation to the March 10th demonstration in Brussels.
NEW YEAR'S DAY FOR THE TIBETAN COMMUNITY IN SWITZERLAND
During New Year's Eve festivities of the Tibetan community in Switzerland, held in Langdau, near Zurich, the importance of the March 10th demonstration in Brussels was stressed to the more than 500 participants by the representative of H.H. the Dalai Lama, Mr Chungdak Koren, together with Mr Tenzin Emchi, President of the Tibetan community in Switzerland. Also speaking were the mayor of Langdau, who has already announced the adherence of his municipality to the initiative, and Mr Olivier Dupuis, Secretary of the Radical Party.
A FLAG FOR TIBET. THE CAMPAIGN AMONG EUROPEAN MAYORS
The number of mayors that have signed the "Freedom for Tibet" appeal and will fly the Tibetan flag from their respective townhalls, has grown to 64 among 15 countries. Here is the list of the new adherences since the previous issue of this newsletter:
Aleksandr Tihonovich DONCOV, mayor of BABUSHKIN, Buryatia e Anatolij Ivanovich SALTYKOV, mayor of IJEVSK, capital of Udmurtia, both of them fro the Russian federation; from France, Jean-Jacques DESCAMPS, mayor of LOCHES, Jean-Marie GIRAULT, mayor of CAEN, Jean-Yves LE DRIEN, mayor of LORIENT and Roger WINTERHALTER, mayor of LUTTERBACH; from Slovenia Alojz KRIZMAN, mayor of MARIBOR, from Italy Enzo BIANCO, mayor of CATANIA, Gianfranco CONTERIO, mayor of VOLPIANO (TO), Giuseppe NAPOLI, mayor of PRECCENICO (UD), Teresia PIAZZA, mayor of OMEGNA (NO) and Flavio POLUZZI, mayor of TIRANO (SO). Furthermore, Piero GALLINA, President of the FORLI-CESENA province, joined the initiative.
BERLUSCONI
Invited to take the floor at the Conference of Italian Reformers, the Radical Party's Secretary Olivier Dupuis ended his speech by offering the Tibetan flag to the Reformers' President Marco Pannella and to Silvio Berlusconi, also a guest attending the Conference, in recognition of the fact that in June 1994, the then Prime minister of Italy officially received His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in spite of the very harsh protests by the Chinese government and the leaders of the Italian Industry Association.
REFORMERS' CONFERENCE
During the Reformers' Conference over 200 activists committed themselves to participate in the "A flag for Tibet" campaign, by going to their respective mayors and by buying Tibetan flags so that private citizens can fly them from their own windows on March 10th.
THE MAYOR OF ROME
The mayor of the Italian capital Francesco Rutelli, addressed the Reformers' conference proclaiming his adhesion to the proposal to fly the Tibetan flag from the nation's capitol building Campidoglio on March 10th. Rutelli also confirmed his total commitment to the ultimate success of the March 10th initiatives.
WEJ FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 1996
Adhesions supporting Wej Gingsheng's nomination for the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize continue to arrive. Wej, one of the most prominent dissidents of the Beijing regime, was incarcerated after a bogus trial and charged with "subversive acts against the Chinese government", consequently risking ultimate elimination of more than just his Chinese political life.
During the last days, Wej's candidacy was supported by, among others, Petr OSADCHUK, Ukranian MP; Zdenek TROJAN, Czech MP; Antonio MARTINO, Italian MP, former Minister of Foreign Affairs; Terezija STOISITS, Andreas WABL and Karl OLLINGER, Austrian MPs; Fernando SAVATER, philosopher and university professor; Claudio MARTELLI, former MP, university professor; and many other professors from the Czech Republic.
APPEAL TO THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS
Six young Tibetans on October 14 undertook a hunger strike calling on the United Nations and the world to end the illegal occupation of Tibet by the People's Republic of China.
Although aware that the international community in general and the United Nations in particular do not yet have the necessary grasp so that they can comply today with the requests made by the young Tibetans, we believe it necessary that they give, with the utmost urgency, a sign that would indicate the hope of a new, more attentive consideration of the Tibetan tragedy.
We therefore turn to you, Secretary General of the United Nations, to receive at the earliest possible date, the Dalai Lama, in order to define with him the possible steps towards the reinstatement in Tibet of the rights and the international legalities that have been violated.
