A FLAG FOR TIBET: NEARLY 200 ADHESIONS BY EUROPEAN MAYORS.

In these past few days, so much news has come in that we decided to close this issue of "Freedom for Tibet" ahead of schedule. Only 28 days remain until March 10th, our big day in Brussels.

One important point of interest is that our first adhesion to the initiative from a German mayor has arrived: the Mayor of WAECHTERSBACH, Mr. M.KRAETSCHMER will fly the "Snow Lions" flag on March 10th, bringing our total of participating cities to 195, and our participating countries within Europe to 21. Keeping in mind that our objective of "500 mayors" is still somewhat distant, this last trend of adhesions is certainly uplifting.

In this issue, in addition to the abundant information regarding the organizational progress of the Demonstration within the various cities of Europe, we are printing in Second Page the text to the press release prepared by the European Committee on the Demonstration.

Best wishes in the work ahead!

Demonstration for Tibet: press release

MARCH 10TH, 1996: EUROPEAN DEMONSTRATION FOR TIBETAN LIBERTY. ORGANIZED BY THE TIBET INTERGROUP OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, BY THE TIBETAN COMMUNITIES IN EUROPE, BY THE EUROPEAN TIBET SUPPORT GROUPS AND BY THE RADICAL PARTY.

Brussels, February 9, 1996. A European demonstration for the "Freedom of Tibet" has been organized for this upcoming March 10th in Brussels. The promoters for this initiative are: The Tibet Intergroup of the European Parliament, the Tibetan communities within Europe, the European Tibet Support Groups and the Radical Party, transnational and transdivisional, which are all united in a European Organizational Committee headquartering in Brussels, and within National Committees among more than 15 European states.

The demonstration will begin at 11:00am on March 10th in front of the Chinese Embassy in Brussels. After marching through the streets of the city, the demonstration will finish in front of the European Parliament Building, whereby the Prof. Samdhong RINPOCHE, president of the Tibetan Parliament in exile, and representatives from European, national, political, and Tibetan delegations will speak.

The demonstrators ask, as is written in the promoter's political platform; that "direct and unconditional negotiations begin, without delay, on the future status of Tibet, between the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government in exile on one side and the government of the People's Republic of China on the other;" that population transfers of the Chinese into Tibet must be halted immediately; and that the civil, religious, and political rights of the Tibetan people be respected.

Numerous party, organization, and union delegations as well as many citizens' groups representing the different National Committees of France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Spain, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Holland, Switzerland and Sweden have already given confirmation of their presence in Brussels.
