Text:
In view of the forthcoming spring session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, will the Council indicate concerning which countries it intends to raise the abuse of human rights as priority issues ?
Concerning China, the Parliament welcomed the cohesion displayed by Member States represented at the UN Commission at last year's session. Will we see an equally forceful attempt to achieve a resolution on China this year, given that such a resolution failed by only one vote in 1995 ? What was the outcome of the troika dialogue on human rights with China which took place in January ? In particular how did the Chinese reply to questions about the imprisonment of Wei Jingsheng, the Pan Am project, the nomination by the Chinese Government of a new Panchen Lama and conditions in Chinese orphanages, all of them subjects of recent resolutions by the European Parliament ?
