BOROUGH OF PRINCETON
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the United States Congress has reenacted legislation declaring Tibet an occupied country whose true representatives are the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations Human Rights Subcommission has passed a resolution concerning the present threat to the cultural, religious and national identity of the Tibetan people; and
WHEREAS, the United States Government has made the renewal of China's "Most Favored Nation" trading status conditional upon significant progress towards the protection of Tibet's distinct religious and cultural heritage and the improvement of human rights in China and Tibet; and
WHEREAS, participants in a 45-day march from Washington, D.C. to the United Nations in New York City will be coming through Princeton and hold a rally in front of Borough Hall at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 1996 to dramatize the plight of Tibetan people;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Marvin R. Reed, Mayor of the borough of Princeton, New Jersey do hereby proclaim Thursday, April 11, 1996 as
TIBETAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
in the Borough of Princeton and urge all residents to reaffirm our support of democratic ideals, including in Tibet, and guaranteeing the liberties of each individual throughout the world.
