Hungary's Foreign Ministry announced yesterday that
ratification documents for Slovakia's new treaty with Hungary
will not carry a controversial appendix tagged on by
nationalists in the Slovak parliament. The move is likely to
ease tensions with Budapest and please Western governments
which have warned both countries they have no hope of joining
NATO or the European Community unless they settle old
quarrels.
Slovakian Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar and Hungary's Gyula
Horn signed the treaty long ago, though parliament in
Bratislava stressed that it did not recognise any collective
rights for Slovakia's Hungarian minority.
