7th ANNIVERSARY OF TIEN AN MEN - CAMPAIGN FOR THE NOBEL TO WEI JINGSHENG AND FOR THE LIBERATION OF THE PANCHEN LAMA
Brussels, June 3rd, 1996
Sir Deputy, Dear Colleague,
tomorrow it will be 7 years that the immense hope for freedom, set in on the Tien An Men square and on the Chinese university campus, has been wiped away by the advocates' perpetuation of the last communist and totalitarian empire.
During these 7 years, the "fifth modernization" - the democracy according to WEI Jingsheng's formula - has been forgotten. Even worse, we assisted in numerous fields to a reinforcement of the regime's repressive character. The condemnations to death, the fake lawsuits, arrests for offence of opinion have been multiplied, the freedom of cult has seriously been restrained, Tibet's colonization considerably reinforced, the lagers-laogai, these enormous reservoirs of forced labour aren't less full, continuing to constitute one of the economic pillars of Peking's exportation. Besides, if it were with regard to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Oriental Turkistan or Tibet, we also testify to a rise of power of hard nationalist attitudes.
All these reasons, there is only one opinion about that, plead in favour of a reinforcement of the mobilization of the international community in general, of Europe and its elected in particular.
With this intent, we bring to your attention two emblematic campaigns of serious infringement of human rights and of fundamental liberties. The first concerns the granting of the Nobel Peace Price 1997 to WEI Jingsheng, recently condemned to a new 15 years of prison penalty. The second, which concerns the abduction and the imprisonment by Peking authorities of the youngest political prisoner, the Panchen Lama, expresses itself by the sending of a maximum of postcards to the Chinese president Zemin.
Strongly hoping that we can count on your support for these initiatives, we greet you, dear colleague, with kindest regards.
