THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT APPROVED AN URGENT RESOLUTION ON THE SERIOUS SITUATION OF THE CHINESE DISSIDENT WEI JINGSHENG AND ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN CHINA

New York, June 21, 1996.. The European Parliament approved an important resolution on the situation of the Chinese dissident Wej Jinsgheng, who, after spending fourteen years in prison for having denounced the violations of human rights in China, was recently sentenced for another fifteen years and imprisoned in the famous lager in Tangshan.

The resolution, presented by the deputies Olivier DUPUIS, secretary of the Radical Party and Noel MAMERE, both from the ERA group (European Radical Alliance), Jessica LARIVE (Liberal group) and by Carlo RIPA DI MEANA (Green group), and then adopted by all the other parliamentarian groups, ask the Chinese government "to proceed without delay an independent juridical revision of the WEI Jingsheng Case, open to international observers".

In its resolution, the European Parliament also asks the release of all people imprisoned for their opinions, the immediate closing of the "laogai" and invites the Chinese government to guarantee the International Humanitarian Organizations the possibility to visit the prisoners confined in the Chinese jails.

In conclusion, with regard to the multiplication in Peking of serious human rights violations, the EP "considers that the European Union should prepare to exercise stronger pressure - including through sanctions - in its economic and commercial relationships with China.

We remind lastly that the Transnational Radical Party, in cooperation with the Federation for the Democracy in China and the organization "Human Rights in China" is collecting signatures to propose the candidature of Wei Jingsheng for the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.
