Brussels, August 13, 1996
Mister President,
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be visiting South-Africa from August 19 to 24, 1996. He comes to South-Africa to ask help and support for the Tibetan people, further more oppressed by China.
We regard you as the highest representative of your people, in one of the most important African countries; and surely, one of the most clearly loved leaders in the struggle for freedom and respect for Human Rights the world over. Therefore, we, members of the European Parliament, respectfully, urge you to officialy meet, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama.
We also urge you to support the international call for negotiations without any preconditions between the Chinese Goverment and the Tibetan Goverment in exile, particularly, even settled at the United Nations level.
In closing, we believe that the coming together of two Nobel Peace Prize awardees, for such noble causes, can only have a positive effect on the International Community and the global struggle for Human Rights and freedom.
Sincerely,
Olivier Dupuis, MEP Gianfranco Dell'Alba, MEP
