THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CONDEMNS THE REPRESSION OF HOMOSEXUALS IN ROMANIA DECLARATION OF OLIVER DUPUIS, EUROPEAN DEPUTY OF THE "RIFORMATORI" AND SECRETARY OF THE RADICAL PARTY
Strasburg, Sept. 20th, 1996. The European Parliament, under the proposal of the Radical European Alliance (ARE), the Green Party, and the Confederation of a United Left (GUE), approved a resolution on the rights of homosexuals in Romania.
In his speech before the vote, Olivier Dupuis, deputy reformer and secretary of the radical party, declared:"This proposal of resolution is particularly important and I think that the Romanian government sees it as such and also as an opportunity."
"It is time that the Romanian parliament, or at least those factions specialized in such practices, understand that such initiatives are not only contrary to the conventions to which Romania has freely adhered, but also the values upon which the European union, to which Romania aspires, is founded."
"Finally, I believe that this and other episodes of this type will encourage every member of this parliament to redouble their efforts so that the union endows itself with a constitution in which such rights will be explicitly codified."
