Declaration: While Wei Jingsheng symbolizes the hope of the Chinese people for freedom, democracy and peace, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima represents the aspirations of the Tibetans for a free, thriving Tibet. Their incommunicado detention is in clear violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and shows lack of confidence in the people's support. We urge the government of the People's Republic of China to alter its policies and release both of them. Such an action would signal the beginning of a genuine dialogue and of peaceful change towards a more harmonious China and Tibet where freedom and happiness, prosperity and influence are not limited to a few but are equally shared and enjoyed by all.
