Tibet: a proposal of action from India

To the Tibet friends

Sub. - seeking help for Tibetan cause.

Dear friends,

I am a Tibet supporter, Indian by nationality, working for several years for Tibet. As I see it a peaceful and satisfactry solution of the Tibetan issue is in the larger interest of all the people of this subcontinent.

Dear friends, over the years the voice in support of Tibet has become louder in the occident. In the nearer part of the world, however, the situation is not yet promising. Especially in India, where His Holiness with his thousands of fellow countrymen live in exile for such a long time, the Govt's apathy as well as peoples' inaction is rather disheartening. This time I shell not dwell upon the reasons behind it. They are many, emerging from various social-political grounds.

Cant you do something to alter the situation? I think you can, if you wish, and provide a stimolus to the Tibet support movement in my country. You will agree India should and must take up a role to start a honourable and meaningful negotiation between the Dalai Lama and the Chinese governement. But the Indian govt has since long forsaken to even mention Tibet, let alone ask the Chinese to honour the commitments they made to both Tibet and India in the 'fifties.

Well, friends, here is what you can do for us. The Chinese President Mr. Jiang Zemin is coming to India on the 28th Nov 1996. If you - in your own capital - go and see the Indian Ambassador on the 27th Nov asking the Indian govt, through him, to reise the human rights and nuclear (environmental) issues with the visiting leader it would put up the matter before the Indian public and the visiting dignitary on the very day he arrives New Delhi. Of course, you have to choose your own imaginative way to say it to the Indian Embassy there. Memoranda? Rally? Shouting? Signed petition? Anything will do if done in earnest and everywhare simultaneously, collecting your general will for a good cause.

I mus underline: this is my personal idea and my suggestion has been made in good faith it would help us all. You are fully capable to evaluate my suggestion and act according to your own understanding. Meanwhile we are preparing ourselves to reise the issue in a sober and effective manner as much as we can on this occasion.

Thanking you heartily, with best wishes,

your sincerely

(Shankar Sharan)
