The California measure permitting use of marijuana for medical purpose prevailed by a vote of 56 percent to 44 percent; the vote in Arizona was 65 percent to 35 percent.
California: Position 215
The California initiative says: "No physician in this state shall be punished, or denied any right or privilege, for having recommended marijuana to a patient for medical purpose." It does not require
doctors to prescribe marijuana.
Arizona: Position 200
The Arizona measure says that any doctor licensed to practice in the state may prescribe marijuana to treat a disease or to relieve the pain and suffering of a patient who is seriously or terminally ill.
Federal officials vehemently opposed both measures, but it is unclear whether Federal authorities will take action against doctors or patients in either state.
Mr. Lungren, the Attorney General of California, said, "We're going to have a very confused legal situation here," because doctors who recommend marijuana may find themselves in violation of Federal law.
