US Congressmen: Demands For Freedom And Democracy in Serbia

The five US congressmen attending protests held by coalition

Zajedno in Belgrade today said they were convinced this was a

matter of genuine demands by Serbian citizens for democratic

changes. They added that they would pass on the ``strong message''

they have received from Belgraders to the US Congress. One of the

congressmen said at a press conference held at the Democratic

Party headquarters this afternoon that they came to Belgrade to

show that the US Congress and the people of the United States

support democratic changes and reforms intended to bring a better

future to the citizens of Serbia. The congressmen are to visit

Montenegro and Croatia next.

Djindjic: Authorities Lost Nerve

Leader of the Democratic Party Zoran Djindjic said in his speech

at today's demonstrations in Belgrade that the latest happenings

were a sure sign that authorities have lost their nerve, their

only reply being force.

Washington Dissatisfied With OSCE Resolution On Yugoslavia

There was notable dissatisfaction in Washington this morning with

Russia's insistence the sentence warning that democratization,

independent media as well as free and fair elections are crucial

conditions in the development of lasting stability in FR

Yugoslavia and the Balkans be excluded from the final document of

the OSCE summit in Lisbon. This has watered down the OSCE's

resolution, as its final document does not carry any direct

criticism of Milosevic's regime--although tens of thousands of

Belgraders are still protesting. The US government, for its part,

has considerably stepped up its pressure on Milosevic to find a

way towards acknowledging the electoral results of November 17.

Dacic: He Who Loses May Be Angry

Concerning both US and EU reactions to the latest developments in

Serbia, Mr. Dacic, spokesman for the ruling party, the Socialist

Party of Serbia, said that the issue of elections is an internal

affair and should not be meddled with by outside observers. He

blamed the opposition for siding once again with those who

demonized Serbia during the recent conflicts in the Balkans. He

stressed ``the decisive victory of the left block'' in local as

well as in federal elections.

America Warns Authorities in Belgrade Once Again

The US government today severely condemned the closing of the

Belgrade radio stations B92 and Index, characterizing this as a

transparent attempt to push the Serbian people deeper into

obscurity and darkness, reports a ``Nasa Borba'' correspondent.

Washington confirmed today that the authorities in Belgrade have

once again been warned by the USA to respect the electoral results

of Nov 17, cancelled by Serbian government's anti-democratic

action. Washington has sent a letter to the President of Serbia

stating that the USA would hold him and his authorities

responsible for any attempt to forcefully end demonstrations in

Serbia.

BOOM 93 from Pozarevac Taken Off Air

Transmitters of ``Boom 93,'' independent radio station in

Pozarevac, were cut off tonight. Since 20:20 tonight broadcasting

by ``Boom 93'' can no longer be heard.

Milorad Tadic, Editor in Chief of ``Boom 93'' said that Petar

Sekic and Jovan Jovanovic, Federal Inspectors for Radio

Communications, issued an order at 20:10 this evening that all

``Boom 93'' broadcasting be ``PROMPTLY'' discontinued. The

decision said that this radio station did not have a working

license and that it is interfering with the work of other radio

stations. ``We are witnessing another wave of oppression aimed at

independent media. The citizens of our country are being reduced

to a state of total information black-out,'' said Tadic. Up to now

Boom 93 had been operating on a temporary license.

Protest in Nis

More than 15,000 supporters of coalition Zajedno, students and the

striking workers of Electronic Industry plant gathered today in

Nis to express their support for the protests in Belgrade. ``A

wave of protests is spreading from large cities to smaller

municipalities and villages, disseminating the truth about why we

are demonstrating and who is to blame for it,'' said Zaharije

Trnavcevic, MP in the Serbian Parliament, in his speech to the Nis

demonstrators.

More accusations were made against Slobodan Milosevic and the

President of the Serbian Parliament Dragan Tomic, followed by a

call for their resignations.

Dear sirs,

Radio B92, the only independent radio station in Belgrade, which was

shut down by authorities on Dec 3.

BeoNET and Radio B92 started a joint Action for protecting and

preserving the independent media in Serbia.

We would very much welcome your support for this action.

We put up a site for petition against this oppression of independent

media in Serbia. The URL is http://www.beonet.yu/akcija/

BeoNET fears with reason that we could be the next victim of

supression of independent Serbian media.

Looking forward to receiving your support on this matter and thanking

you in advance.
