< FREEDOM FOR TIBET/DEMOCRACY IN CHINA ! - #49 >

Newsletter on the campaigns of the Radical Party for the freedom of Tibet and the democracy on China.

"I truly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Since periods of great change such as the present one come so rarely in human history, it is up to each of us to make the best use of our time to help create a happier world".

Tenzin GYATSO, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, 1992

THE GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED:

1,000 SIGNATURES OF SUPPORT FOR THE CANDIDACY OF WEI JINGSHENG FOR THE 1997 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

TRP secretary Olivier Dupuis will deliver the 1,084 signatures that have been collected in these seven months of work for the candidacy of Wei Jingsheng for the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize to the Nobel Committee in Oslo on January 31st. The campaign collected the signatures of hundreds of Parliamentarians from all over the world, including signatures from the Parliament of Taiwan and the entire Tibetan Parliament in exile, as well as the representative groups of the European Parliament, the Parliaments the nations of eastern Europe, and the Congress of the United States. Dozens of university professors from the most prestigious faculties in the world also signed the appeal, as well as the previous Nobel Laureates Desmond Tutu, Mairead Maguire Corrigan, and Adolfo Perez Esquivel.

This productive season in the fight for democracy in China will not end with the consignment of the signatures to the Nobel Committee. various community councils in Italy have already voted for motions in support of Wei's candidacy. On March 9-10, demonstrations will take place in Geneva, in which thousands and thousands of supporters will march through the streets to the United Nations building for the freedom of Tibet and the respect of civil and political rights in all of the territories governed by the communist leaders of the People's Republic of China.

This is a happy moment on the road to the fulfillment of our objectives, but we must also immediately focus on the most important goal: the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize for Wei Jingsheng and his immediate release from prison. It is only with an intense global mobilization that this success will occur, a success which is not ours, but that of democracy in the world.

In this edition of "Tibet-China Fax" we have also published the "International Register" for participation in the manifestations in Geneva. This can also be a valid instrument with which to measure the level of preparation for this important event. We ask you to send it to us every time that substantial changes or additions concerning the participation of people or groups from your city or territory take place.

Good Work!

A FLAG FOR TIBET 1997:

2,809 TO GO UNTIL THE GOAL OF 3,000 IS REACHED.

Another 36 communities have signed their support for our campaign. It is a small increase in regards to the preceding weeks, bit still far removed from the required pace. Less than 38 days remain before March 9-10. In the coming days the support of mayors for the campaign will be launched in Austria, and we have received news that the numerous militants of the Tibet Support Groups and TRP have begun to initiate telephone contact with mayors in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Luxembourg, Belgium, and Switzerland. We wish you the best of luck! The time is relatively short....

WEI JINGSHENG FOR THE 1997 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

The goal of 1,000 signatures in support of Wei's Nobel candidacy has been achieved. To be exact, we have succeeded in collecting 1,084 signatures (751 Parliamentarians, 328 University professors, 3 Nobel Laureates, and two members of government), and other signatures continue to arrive. It is important to publish the long list of people who signed the petition in order to appreciate the global reach of the campaign. We send a heart felt "Thank you" to all of the people who contributed to the success of this campaign, and wish you good work in the coming months!

HONG KONG/CHINA/EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Radical Alliance Members of the European Parliament Gianfranco Dell'Alba and Olivier Dupuis have requested the vice president of the European Commission Sir Leon Brittan to inform the European Parliament on what the Commission plans to do as a reaction to the serious threat against human rights in Hong Kong after Brittan returns from China this coming July 1st. "Before the obvious and deliberate intention of the Chinese to eliminate the civil rights of the inhabitants of Hong Kong, we ask that the Commission immediately revise its political relations with China and move towards precise guarantees concerning the future of Hong Kong," they declared. The two deputies also ask that the European Parliament extend an invite to Chris Patten, the ruler of Hong Kong. (1.27.97)
