Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta and Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys will speak at the Tibetan National Uprising Day rally at Ralphe Bunche Park, across the street from the United Nations at 1st Avenue and 43rd Street on Monday, March 10th. The rally will take place from I 1:00arn - 1:00pm, and will be followed by a march to the Chinese Mission at Broadway and 66th Street and a rally there from 2:00 - 4:00pm. An act of non-violent civil disobedience is also planned.
March 10th also known as Tibetan National Uprising Day, commemorates the 1959 demonstrations in Tibet following the invasion of the Chinese military. These demonstrations were brutally suppressed and 87,000 Tibetans died for speaking out against the Chinese occupation. An estimated 1.2 million Tibetans have since died as a direct result of this occupation. All but a handful of Tibet's 6,000 monasteries were destroyed, and religious persecution of Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns continues to this day.
Jose Ramos-Horta won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in support of the people of East Timor. Adam Yauch is a member of the Beastie Boys and has co-founded the Milarepa Fund, a non-profit group that organized last summer's Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco.
