March 10, 1997 marks the 38th anniversary of the Lhasa uprising, a Protest against China's invasion
of Tibet- To honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for their country, Tibetan freedom fighters and friends of Tibet will gather at the United Nations to demonstrate the' support for the non-violent Tibetan freedom movement.
The people of New York cherish democracy, h rights and freedom for all. It is, therefore, only fitting that we commemorate this significant occasion with the U.S, Tibet Committee and Tibetans throughout the state and the world.
The Empire State salutes the people of Tibet as well as the many Tibetans who call New York home. Upon the solemn commemoration of this historic event, let us join with Tibetans throughout the world in their continued hope and prayers for freedom.
NOW, TBEREFORE, I, George E. Pataki, Governor of the State of New York., do hereby recognize March 10, 1997 as
TIBIETAN NATIONAL DAY
in the Empire State.
