Trial Opens in The Hague
For 3 Bosnian Muslim
THE HAGUE, March 10 (AP) - A war crimes trial began today for three Muslims and a Croat accused of raping, torturing and killing Serbs during the war in Bosnia. '
Serbs held for months at the Celebici camp in Muslim-controlled central Bosnia were "murdered, tortured, raped and beaten by guards at the prison and by outside persons who were permitted to come into the camp," said the prosecutor, Eric Ostberg.,
A spokesman for the United Nations court said it was the first trial where rape was considered a war crime. It is also the first collective war crimes trial since the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials after World War II.
Most of those indicted for war crimes in Bosnia have been Serbs. Bosnian Serbs see the trial as a chance to prove that they were not the only ones responsible for atrocities during the wars in Croatia and Bosnia.
About 500 Serbs, most of them civilians, were kept in the camp. Inmates were beaten with steel cables and wooden and metal kept in vats, of water, burned heated scissors and wrapped fuses that were then lighted, page indictment charges. At least died. Women were raped, it says)
