600 people gathered on March 9th to participate in a demonstration that wound through the streets of New York City towards the Chinese Consulate near the UN. Participants of the march, which was organized by Students for a Free Tibet, Tibet Committee New York/New Jersey, Tibet Women Association, Tibet Association, Office of Tibet, Tibet Fund, the Transnational Radical Party, as well as other associations, included 1996 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Jose Ramos HORTA, representative of the Dalai Lama in the Americas Dawa TSERING, Robert THURMAN, President of Tibet House, and XIAO Giang, director of Human Rights in China. Adam YAUCH of the popular rap group the Beastie Boys was also present. The demonstrators covered themselves with Tibetan flags as they lied on the ground in front of the Chinese consulate, creating problems for the NYPD. The demonstration ended with the participants singing the Tibetan national anthem.
