Earth Day Observance at the Peace Bell
A short ceremony to mark the vernal equinox ("Earth Day") will take place at 2,30 p.m. on Thursday, 20 March, at the Peace Bell in the VIC Playa. Statements will be made by the Executive Director of UNDCP/Director-General of UNOV and the Permanent Representative of Japan. Also participating in the ceremony will be the delegation of Young Civic Ambassadors from Japan as representatives of the Tokyo-based Drug Abuse Prevention Centre (DAPC).
Since 1994, this NGO has contributed US$ 1.92 million to UNDCP, collected with the help of many thousands of young Japanese volunteers. The contributions are used to support drug demand reduction efforts by grass-roots NGOs in developing countries. The peace bell, presented to the United Nations in Vienna in 1995 as a gift of the DAPC and the Japanese Sumo Association, is dedicated to hopes of world peace and the eradication of drug abuse.
