Subject: RE: POLITICAL PRISONER GOMES SANCHEZ
Greetings!:
Yes, Mr. Gomes Sanchez is on my list. He was arrested sometime in 1994,
and sentenced to 20 years in jail for the crimes of illegal exit and
piracy(that means he attempted to highjack or steal a boat to come to the U.S.)
He is in Kilo 8 Prison, Camag ey Province, and apparently suffers from a
liver condition, probably cancer. That is all I have.

Leader Of Young People for Democracy Is Detained in Palma Soriano
CALL GOES OUT FOR INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH YOUNG CUBAN DEMOCRAT
HAVANA, May 1, 1997.
By Monike de Motas, special for CubaNet
Graciela de la Vega, the mother of Radames Garcia de la Vega,
vice-president of the Cuban movement Jovenes por la Democracia
(Young People for Democracy), is urgently requesting international
solidarity to demand the freedom for her son, who is being held
in Palma Soriano, and is being threatened with a trial for the alleged
contempt to the person of the Commandant in Chief.
Radames Garcia de la Vega had been summoned by officer Ceden~o last April
29, and at this interview he order him to make himself
available for a meeting with State Security officers in the locality of
Versalles, Santiago de Cuba.
On April 30, he received a second summons to present himself, along with
his identity papers, to the State Security offices at 3
o'clock. Since this office closes at 2, upon his arrival, he was not able
to enter and returned along with his mother.
As they got out of a store, a political police officer, on a motorcycle,
intercepted them on the street, and charged Radames without
listening to his explanation. On May 1st, Graciela went to the State
Security officers and they informed the desperate woman that her
son had been taken to the offices of the National Revolutionary Police.
They told her at the police unit that her son Radames was being held
incomunicado and that they would not deliver any family care
package to him because he was going to be tried for contempt to the person
of the Commandant in Chief. (Fidel)
The political police has already taken off the streets the president of
the Jovenes por la Democracia, Nestor Rodriguez Lobaina, and
now intends to do the same with the vice-president. It seems that the
government doesn't forgive the project University Students
Without Frontiers.

BPIC - MAY 8,1997
A Youth Director of the Cuban Opposition is Detained
Palma Soriano, May 5,1997,BPIC; Last April 30th,Radames Garcia de la Vega,
Vice President of the Cuban opposition movement,
Jovenes por la Democracia, was detained in the city of Palma Soriano. He
was also the co-sponsor of an autonomous university
project.
This occurrence was related, via telephone by Mrs.Graciela de la Vega,
mother of the detained youth. She said that her son was
practically kidnapped on a public street by an agent of the political
police who drove a motorcycle with a side car. This occurred
when both mother and son were returning to their home after having
responded to an order from the Departamento del Seguridad del
Estado to appear at the public registry office of said local.
After not knowing his whereabouts for 24 hours, an agent of State Security
told Mrs.de la Vega that her son was arrested in the
police station of Palma Soriano. He was accused of disrespect of President
Castro, for which presumably he will be subject to a
court trial.
The mother of the young opponent added that on June 6th, he will fulfill
one year of house arrest imposed in an arbitrary fashion
due to his anti-government political activities. She also called for
international solidarity from universities and international
organizations for the defense of human rights so that they will intercede
in his case.
Last April 10th, the President of Jovenes por la Democracia, Nestor
Rodriguez Lovaina, was condemned to 18 months of loss of
freedom for supposed crimes of resisting arrest, and disrespect. An other
director of this movement,Heriberto Layva Rodriguez, has
stated that the State Security threatened him with jail before the
celebration this summer of the 14th World Festival of Youth and
Students. REPORT: Mercedes Moreno
