Liao Shuangyuan, 43, a security section cadre at the Guizhou Bearing Plant, was sentenced in early or mid-1996 to four years' imprisonment and four years' deprivation of political rights for "actively participating in a counterrevolutionary group." In May 1995 Liao was involved in the "Open Letter to the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee" (see Chen Xi above). Liao Shuangyuan was tried and sentenced in 1996 together with Chen Yi, Huang Yanming, Lu Yongxiang and Zeng Ning. The verdict states that all of them "aimed to subvert proletarian dictatorship and the socialist system" and "schemed to subvert the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party." Liao Shuangyuan spent three years of RTL after being accused of "counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement" for his involvement in Guiyang's 1989 democracy movement.
