Yu Zhijian, 29, a rural primary school teacher in Hunan, has been in constant solitary confinement since he was sentenced on August 11, 1989, and transferred to Hunan Provincial Prison No.3. to serve a life term for "counterrevolutionary sabotage and incitement." As a result of torture and ill-treatment in prison for allegedly making "reactionary statements" and for failing to reform, his health has reportedly greatly suffered. Yu was one of three men who threw ink and paint-filled eggs at the Tiananmen Square portrait of Mao Zedong during the 1989 democracy movement. (Sources: Human Rights in China - New York)
