Tibetan Youth Congress Activists Demonstrate at the UN office
On the 15th day of the unto-death hunger strike, ten TYC volunteers from Herbertpur, Dehradun, arrived here to stage a relay fast. They are fasting for 120 hours to demonstrate their solidarity with six hunger strikers at Jantar Mantar to express their solidarity with them. The youth from Herbertpur then went to the UN office and presented a memorandum, urging it to accept the demands made by the Tibetan Youth Congress. They also staged a demonstration and shouted solgans in support of the recommendations made on Tibet in December 1997 by the International Jurists.
According to reports reaching here, 200 TYC activists from Rabangla, Gangtok, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Salugara, Sonada, and Kurseong gathered at Siliguri, West Bengal, on 23 March under the leadership of Mr. Tsewang Paljor, member of the TYC Central Executive Committee. Similarly, the Tibetans at Dharmsala staged a 24 hour fast. The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress also held a 24 hour fast at Chandigarh, which was participated by the TYC activists and foreign friends and supporters of Tibet.
A delegation of the Tibetan Youth Congress went to the office ofthe Indian Prime Minister and submitted a memorandum, requesting his government to support the demands of the TYC and prevail upon the UN Secretary-General to act immediately and urgently on these demands. The TYC delegation also submitted a memorandum to Shri L.K. Advani, President of BJP, requesting his party to urge the Government of India to support the TYC demands at different UN fora.
Ms. Jaya Jaitley, General Secretary of the Samata Party, visited the Tibetan hunger strikers and wrote, "You can be assured of our full support, always."
Dr. Sonam arrived from Dikyiling settlement in the evening and saw the hunger strikers. She will stay in Delhi to look after the health of the hunger strikers.
