International Criminal Court: press release

"I CARE, BECAUSE I HAVE A DREAM" - FASTING FOR DIALOG WITH DELEGATES OF DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCE IN ROME ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT (ICC). TOGETHER WITH MORE THAN 250 RADICAL ACTIVISTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, ... RUSSIAN RADICALS ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THE FASTING

Moscow, July 13, 1998. Only 4 days remain till the end of the Diplomatic Conference on the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is working in Rome since June 17. During these days 162 delegations working in the FAO headquarters should elaborate consensus on the most important and controversial issues (relations between the Court and the UN Security Council, Prosecutor's empowerment, relations between national and international jurisdictions) and to approve the Statute of the Court before the Conference will end its work on Friday.

It is of extreme importance, not to allow the efforts spent during years of preparations and three weeks of Conference's work, be spent in vain. It is necessary to create on this Conference in Rome first time in the world a new, unprecedented sovra-national jurisdiction, capable to act independently from UNSC and to open the cases against those responsible for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity, wherever and by whomever they be committed.

For this purpose the Transnational Radical Party, which is struggling for the creation of the International Criminal Court for more than five years, conducts now campaign to mobilize public opinion in favour of the successful end of the Conference. On June 9 and 10 the TRP has published ad pages in Corriere della Sera and International Herald Tribune with appeal to the delegates on the Conference. Tomorrow at 18:30 on the initiative of the Radical Party and No Peace Without Justice International Committee in Italian capital there will be a many-thousand Torch March, headed by European Commissioner Emma Bonino, Mayor of Rome Francesco Rutelli and other knows public personalities and politicians. Starting from Capitol Hill, by "via sacra", near the Coliseum, the march will arrive to the FAO headquarters, where its participants will hand over the petition: "No excuse, no alibi! The International Criminal Court must be created on July 17, 1998!"

From July 8 more than 250 Radical Party's activists joined a nonviolent action in the spirit of Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King: fasting for dialog with delegates to the Conference, under slogan "I care, because I have a dream". The aim of the action initiated by Paolo Pietrosanti, member of General Council of the Transnational Radical Party is to let delegates know, how much the ordinary citizens care for not to bury the establishment of the Court in endless bureaucratic coordinations, for the historic mission of the Conference to be successful.

Also in Moscow five persons participate today in this fasting, among them Russian coordinator of the TRP Nikolaj Khramov. At midnight another ... persons will join them - activists of the Radical Party and simply common citizens, who care for the creation the universal sovra-national independent criminal jurisdiction, who do not want this Court to remain merely beautiful dream.
