TWO KOSOVARS AND A TURK CANDIDATES FOR 1998 PRIZE

Brussels, 13/10/1998 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Political Committee has chosen the three finalists for the Sakharov Prize 1998: - the President o the Turkish Human Rights Association, Akin Birdal, the candidate of the Socialist Group (22 votes); - the leader of the Kosovar Albanians, Ibrahim Rugova, candidate of the EPP Group (16 votes); - the Kosovar Professor, Ushkin Hoti, candidate of the Radical Alliance, currently in prison (6 votes). The Conference of EP President (President Gil-Robles and the Presidents of the political groups) will choose the winner, who will receive the prize at December's plenary session in Strasbourg.
