The NATO Secretary-General, Javier Solana, has
warned the Yugoslav authorities that any attempt
to harm or intimidate Western monitors in Kosovo
would have serious consequences.
The warning came after an incident in Kosovo on
Sunday in which American diplomatic observers
said Yugoslav troops had fired over their vehicle.
The Yugoslav army denied the charges and said
the observers had mistaken backfiring from two
Yugoslav army vehicles for gunfire.
This is the first allegation of shooting at
international observers in Kosovo. BBC
