Subject: New Panchen Lama CampaignAs most of you know, ITIM has coordinated 2 postcard campaigns to secure the release of The Panchen Lama, Gendhun Choekyi Nyima. The first was directed at U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright, while the second went to Gregory Craig of the U.S. State Dept. Both campaigns were successful (over 125,000 postcards were distributed).
Now, ITIM is launching another postcard campaign on behalf of the missing 9 year old Panchen Lama. We are in the process of designing a mailer that can be sent to both President Jiang Zemin and the U.N. High Commissioner of Human Rights. We selected these individuals because we wanted to mount a coordinated international campaign to demonstrate strong support for the release of The Panchen Lama.
The message to Pres. Jiang will be:
Release The Panchen Lama, Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, NOW!
The message to the U.N High Commissioner will be:
Where is The Panchen Lama, Gendhun Choekyi Nyima?
Basic information about The Panchen Lama will also be included with this mailer, so that uninformed individuals will learn something about the background of this situation. The campaign will be launched during the beginning of January 1999.
To demonstrate strong international support for this campaign, we invite your organization to serve as a co-sponsor. All that is required of co-sponsors is that they agree to receive 5000 postcards and pay the shipping and handling costs for these cards. In the U.S., the cost is $50 (U.S.) and for groups outside of the U.S., the cost is $75 (U.S.). ITIM will cover the expense of designing and printing the cards.
On the postcards, we will list all the co-sponsors so that Pres. Jiang and the U.N. High Commissioner understand that there is extensive and worldwide support for The Panchen Lama. Please let me know by November 30, if your organization wants to co-sponsor this campaign. I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace, Larry Gerstein
