ICC: SAN MARINO, THIRD COUNTRY, THE FIRST IN EUROPE, TO RATIFY THE ICC ROME STATUTE. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GRAND GENERAL COUNCIL FOR HAVING CONFIRMED THE COMMITMENT OF SIGNING THE STATUTE IN ROME LAST YEAR.

Rome, 30 April 1999. The Radical Party and No Peace Without Justice congratulate the Republic of San Marino on its ratification of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Rome Treaty.

With this important act of the Grand General Council, San Marino becomes the first European Government party to the Rome Treaty; while at the same time, other countries like Italy, France and Belgium have started their ratification procedures but are not finalizing it with the necessary speed.

In the light of the war in Kosovo, TRP and NPWJ launch a solemn appeal to the Member States of the European Union to formally commit, at the next meeting of the European Council, to the immediate ratification of the ICC Rome Treaty.

The Radical Party and No Peace Without Justice, which last year launched their "Ratification Now!" international campaign for the entry into force of the permanent Court by the end of 2000, remind that the ICC will be operative when at least 60 States will have ratified the convention. The ICC will have jurisdiction over War Crimes, Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity. As of today three countries have ratified the Treaty: Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago and today San Marino.
