Mr Dupuis accuses World Bank of becoming an accomplice to human rights violations in Tibet
03/06/1999 (Agence Europe) MEP Olivier Dupuis deplores the attitude of the management of the World Bank, which could be deciding on 8 June to lend China USD 334 million for the China Western Poverty Reduction Project. This project provides for the transfer of some 60,000 Chinese settlers to Tibetan territory. According to Mr Dupuis, this would be tantamount to the World Bank becoming an "accomplice and even the co-author of the policy of the colonisation of Tibet and the destruction of an age-old people and culture".
The Radical Party has also issued an appeal in favour of four persons facing the death sentence in India for the murder of Rajiv Gandhi. It calls upon the European Union to make every effort to get the President of the Indian Union to spare the four and urges the EU to take an initiative in the United Nations for establishment of a universal moratorium on capital punishment.
