The Russian newspaper "Moskovskaja Vrjeme" had published a series of reports on the 12,000 plus Russian soldiers and officers, all graduates of the elite former Soviet military academy, BRSS, who joined the Serbian army to fight in Kosova. In addition to these trained killers, according the these reports, 2000 Russian women were arranged to accompany them to provide them with all the necessary "comforts." This relationship between the former BRSS and the Serbian state has been an old one. Since 1997, high-level officers have joined the ranks of the Serbian army and one of them has been repeatedly recruiting his former colleagues of the BRSS from a news program on Russian ORT1, calling them to "volunteer" to fight in Kosova.
It is reported these "volunteers" are being paid between $2000 and $3000 a month to fight in Kosova.
These Russian mercenaries have been an important part of the murderous war that Serbia has conducted in Kosova. Hundreds of these Russian soldiers have been killed by KLA soldiers and their personal documents prove their Russian nationality. It is feared that the current peace plan does not address this problem and those who have been raping, torturing and murdering Kosovars for the last two years may be allowed to slip into the uniforms of a Russian contingent allocated to the peace-keeping force now being planned to enter Kosova
