Mr Brok calls for an initiative from the German government
07/07/1999 (Agence Europe)
The elected European member of the CDU Elmar Brok has written to Joschka Fischer, German foreign affairs minister, requesting him to propose at a future EU foreign affairs Council, an initiative in order to group, in some cases, the diplomatic representations of EU Member States in third countries. Mr Brok recalls that this is foreseen in a EU common position dated 2 October 1995 (Ed.: which also foresees the possibility of grouping Commission represntations with those of Member States), but that this possibility was "unfortunately, very little used". The European identity could be "srengthened" by "common represnetations/embassies", he writes, while admitting that "this is not yet the case for the major centres of power in the world".
