FLORA BROVINA
Flora Brovina, 50, (As Washington Post calls her) is the most famous political prisoner in Yugoslavia. Flora, one of the most respected figures in the Kosova's society, was arrested during the NATO air strikes, in April 20th 1999.
Flora, a pediatrician, poet and human rights activist, founded the Albanian Women's League (AWL), the first non-political, non-governmental women association in Kosova.
To many, Flora has become a modern Mother Theresa, and her arrest has raised a great concern among citizens of Kosova.
After the Serbian massacres in Drenica in 1998, and war in Kosova, Dr. Flora saw the need to act, and together with AWL, she opened the Center for The Rehabilitation of Mothers and Children, where over 300 people founded shelter and hope.
Flora Brovina was chosen as the Top three most influential women of the year 1999 in the "Marie Claire" magazine, and is the 1999 Tulchovsky Prize winner.
Flora's trial is next week (November 11th). We all need to there for her, because she was always there for us.
Her only crime was protecting of women and children rights, that carried the most weight of this nasty war. She couldn't let these children fend for themselves, but now she is being accused for terrorism by the government of the indicted war criminal.
Let us all try and play our parts in seeking hers and the release of the other 7.000 Albanian hostages that are being held in Serbian prisons and camps. Let us enter the 21st century with clean conscious.
