AIMED AT KOSOVAR POLITICAL LEADERSAugust 11, 2000
Since the liberation of Kosova, a number of political leaders from different
parties have been victims of attacks and even murder. In recent weeks such
attacks have escalated.
As of yet, the perpetrators of these attacks are not known. But what is sure
is that those who commit such acts of violence are working against democracy
in Kosova. At the very heart of democracy is a respect for different ideas
and for the right of people to choose freely their leaders.
Too often in the past, people in the Balkans have settled their differences
through violence. Kosovars cannot allow themselves to fall victim to
Balkan-style politics and should reject violence in all its forms.
Therefore, we strongly condemn all acts of violence directed at political
figures in Kosova, and we call on all Kosovar leaders to do the same.
We also call on UNMIK and KFOR to take action to end these acts of violence.
KFOR should provide protection where requested by political leaders and
should work aggressively to arrest and try the culprits of these crimes.
KFOR, together with UNMIK, should also seal the border between Kosova and
Serbia. Although it is unclear what role Serb agents are playing in Kosova,
it is clear that they are operating in the country, that they are willing to
employ extreme acts of violence to achieve their goals, and that their
interests are diametrically opposed to those of the Albanians.
With the first local elections coming up soon, all Kosovars should be
celebrating their differences and encouraging the presentation of competing
political platforms. Through discussion and even competition among
politicians, Kosova will emerge more democratic, freer, and stronger.
