Macedonia crisis divide Albania's politics

As fighting flares along the Tetovo environs, Albania's politics are strongly divided on approaching with the Macedonia's ethnic Albanian extremists who have been exchanging fire with Macedonian authorities.

Mostly Tirana's leftist ruling parties have lead immediately to condemn the violence in Macedonia, wherever it comes from, and have urged ethnic Albanian extremist to put down their guns.

Ilir Meta Albania's Prime Minister, Arben Xhaferi and Imer Imeraj leaders of the two Macedonia's main ethnic Albanian parties, after a meeting in Tirana, stated that any violence goes against Albanian interests and the position adopted by political representatives of the Albanian community in Macedonia.

Paskal Milo Albania's foreign minister met Srdjan Kerim the Macedonian foreign minister in the northeastern Albania's town of Peshkopia to discuss for the constructive role Albania can play in front of tensions in Macedonia.

Kerim stated after this meeting that his government does not hold all Albanians responsible for the recent violence, in effect.

But later in the week, leaders of regional parliaments met in Skopje for exchanging opinions on the implementation of the Stability Pact, meeting which been reduced in bilateral discussions on the Tetovo's events.

Namik Dokle and Arta Dade respectively Albanian parliament vice-president and Socialist Party Foreign Relation Secretary & PM have refused to sign the Skopje meeting resolution, which claims that the Albanians of the region do demand the foundation of a greater Albania!

In the meanwhile, Macedonian Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski states in a public Macedonian nationalist meeting in Skopje that the West is permitting the creation of "a new Taliban in Europe" referring to the Afghanistan's ultra-radical Islamic movement.

Albania's Foreign Ministry has replied stating that what is happening in Macedonia cannot be colored with unacceptable terms, which testimonies more haste and nervousness than reality.

"We must be careful in using such terms which give religious character in actual situation in Macedonia" has said Paskal Milo adding that - "this is harmful and don't help on the cohesion of the Macedonian state".

Georgievski who, strangely forgetting that Albanians there are very part of the country, believes that NATO owes Macedonia a moral debt for allowing it to be used as the staging area for NATO's 1999 war against then remained Yugoslavia, has said: ''you cannot convince us that the chieftains of these gangs are unknown to your governments, nor can you persuade us that they cannot be stopped'' - referring mostly to Washington and Berlin!

The Albanian extremists say that they are fighting to improve conditions for an estimated 500,000 ethnic Albanians, of Macedonia with 2.3 million citizens, who want to be equal to the Macedonian and other ethnicities, in front of laws, other civil rights, culture and education.

Georgi Efremov rector of the Macedonian Arts and Science Academy (MASA) has sent an open letter to Ylli Popa rector of the Albania's Science Academy, (ASA) remembering a meeting maintained two years ago between the two academies in Tirana.

"Two years ago our Academies did exchange their respective points of views figured out by two opponent documents. The first there was your platform for the solution of the national Albanian case and the second our opponent one - We did not get any positive response for our critical approaching, but now it seems we get it in Tanusheve."

Popa expressing his personal condolences to Efremov for victims in both Macedonian and Albanian parts says to his Macedonian counterpart that to ASA's platform has never called for violence and no where there is pronounced for a greater Albania.

"The platform of ASA, in relation with Macedonia, does express the will to see the Albanians in this country as equal citizens in their state. We do consider the violent acts of some Albanian extremist groups as unacceptable"

"Macedonian politicians have feared terribly these ten long years because the Albanians are trying to have their private University of Albanian language. They do want Albanians in Macedonia, but not educated ones because this could made of Albanian third Class citizens equal citizenship," says Ali Dhrimo to the article "Who defend the Albanian?" published by the Albanian newspaper Shekulli.

The Macedonian politics instead of using politics to resolve the crisis have sent the military tanks and armoured personnel carriers into Tetovo, bombing infinitely the Albanian extremist positions backing up the police units, in effect.

Bardhyl Londo a well-known independent analyst says for the Albanian newspaper Tema that unfortunately, in these difficult days, a very part of Albania's politics, where there is included even the official Tirana's diplomacy, do see the crisis of Macedonia as a possibility to show "their own moderator policy" in front of the International Community, more than to accept this unique case for self reflection to understand what is not done and the reasons which have sent to violence in Macedonia.
