ITALY - Concerning the recent Supreme Court acquittal of an individual charged with the purchase of hashish in sufficient quantity for personal use by a participating and consenting group, CORA and Lista Bonino point out that in principle "this brings nothing new of any importance", and ask what ever happened to all the promises and good intentions by the Ministry of Social Solidarity concerning the decriminalisation of certain drug-related behaviour. The say that "the government should present a draught law on decriminalisation". In September the trial against several members of the Radical Party for free distribution of hashish in public will resume.

The convinction of an air force enlisted man was reversed when the Supreme Court ruled last week that it is not a crime for one person to acquire a quantity of hashish for himself and several other consenting persons provided it is for their personal use. The accused, who had been caught togheter with several other fellow-servicemen, was acquitted and freed.

The Colombian government has asked the Unites States for additional 500 milion dollars to combat against guerrillas involved in cocaine and heroin traffick. The U.S. has sent Gen. Barry McCaffrey, chief of the Drug Enforcement Agency, to Colombia to study the question.
