STRASBOURG, France The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) will hold a special meeting in Brussels on March 22 23, EU Fisheries Commissioner Emma Bonino said on Wednesday.
The meeting was requested by the European Union and Poland to try and resolve a dispute between the EU and Canada over fishing for Greenland halibut, also known as turbot, in international waters off Newfoundland.
"I think this will be the opportunity...to resolve the issue," Bonino told the European Parliament.
"The European Commission reiterates it is inviting Canada to get back to the negotiating table and to restore legality," Bonino said.
But a Commission official said the meeting could be cancelled if Canada failed to change its position or refused to attend.
