MOSCOW 25 October 1990 - For the first time in its history Moscow Military Recruitment Station was totaly blocaded by public activists. Over 150 people, mostly young pacifists and soldiers' and draftees' parents, sat and layed down on the ground infront of autobasses that brought draftees to the Station for sending them from it to military units. They demanded immediate setting up of alternative civil service and ceasing of violations of human rights in army. Alexander Kalinin, a member of the Federal Council, deputy of the Moscow Soviet, Alexander Pronozin and some other Radicals were among organizers of this action. A number of busses was stopped and inspite of efforts of the drivers, military staff of the Station and militia could not enter the Station. A few officers that came to their work were compelled to climbe over the hense to get into the place. While the action lasted a small delegation including Alexander Kalinin was talking to the Chief military comissar of Moscow general-major Bespalov. Bespal
ov said that he shared some demands of the protesters but he as an official had to observe for obeying to law. Nothing concrete was told by him. Meanwhiles most of those brought in busses were by officers given coins for metro and let go home as it was impossible to organize any work.
The next same action is planned to be held in two weeks.
