MOSCOW: SOVIET MASS-MEDIA ABOUT THE PICKET

A reportage from the picket at the Moscow city draft station organized on November 16th by the Radical party, Soldiers' Mothers Committee, Moscow Students' Club and a number of other organizations was at the same day broadcasted by the Central TV in the program of night news.

On November 16th qnd 17th notes about the picket were placed in "Vechernjaja Moskva" ("Moscow Evening"). The "Transnational radical party" was pointed as a sourse of the information. "Vechernjaja Moskva" is a poplular Moscow daily newspaper, circulation 650.000 copies per day.

On Novenber 17th an article about the picket with a big photo was published in "Pravda" ("Trooth") - a daily all-Union newspaper, the main official organ of the Communist party, circulation more than 7 million copies per day. Pravda's correspondent N.Krivomazov began his article with a story about his own son who at first had tried to evade military service but at last took a decision to serve "where the Motherland sent him". Writing about the picket itself Krivomazov first of all was irritated with a big number of correspondents and foreign ones as well. Participants of the picket were discribed by him as "two angry provocators, three eldery women and 15 young men in old uniforms". The "moscow bureau of the transnational radical party" was named as the organizer of the "performance".

The author of the article wrote that several participants of the picket "honestly and whillingly confessed that they came to shout for money" and payed attention that the press-comunication about the picket had been sent to journalists by telefax. The argument that "anti-soviet elements" make their "provocations" for money has been very seldome used by Soviet officials since the time of "stagnation", and if it is used now again it means that all other arguments has finished.

That was the first mentioning of the Radical party in so big official Soviet newpaper as "Pravda".

An article about the picket appeared in the main daily organ of the Ministry of Defence "Krasnaja zvezda" ("Red Star"), circulation 1.800.000 copies per day. This newspaper estimated the number of gathered people as 35-40. Correspondent colonel F.Semjanovskij also paied attention to a number of foreing TV cameramen attracted by the event.
