Prague, February 5th 1991.
In Czechoslovakia exists a strong political organization mostly composed by gypsies. It's called ROI (Romska Obcanska Iniciativa = Rom's Civic Iniciative), and it has some members sitting in the Parliament. The President of ROI is Emil Scuka, who is also member of Transnational Radical Party, such as some MPs. In these days it has been founded a new gypsies' organization, the Movement of Involved Gypsies, whose main aim is to oppose ROI.
The following is the press release by radicals living in Czechoslovakia:
Emil Scuka's fault is very heavy: it's that he is a honest person and politician, able to have strategic and vide visions.
That's not the only fault, because he has worked very well, in an intelligent way; he has organized a policy able to get gypsies out of ghettos. There exist who doesn't excuse it.
It is -of course- a tipical phenomenon of the worst politics, a kind of politics that would be a compliment to call politique politicienne; in fact, when somebody has worked and is still working with great seriousness in favour of the right of gypsies to dignity and respect -i.e. in favour of the right of every and each citizen to dignity and respect- immediately somebody gets out trying to exploit the results got by others' engagement. That's a tipical parasitic political habit: nothing new.
What's really bad is that this kind of poor parasitic operations harm just gypsies. The great merit (and the extraordinary intelligence) of ROI and of its President has been exactly that to have devised a policy able to brake the ghetto in which gypsies are closed, just in the interest of the whole society, not only for gypsies.
But somebody cares only his own interest and his own advantages. He is on disposal to sacrifice the rights of gypsies and of the whole society, in the name of it: he is on disposal to close again the gypsies in the ghetto.
We hope there will be enough intelligence and consciousness able to cross over those very poor facts.
Above all because in this country the distance between some ways to make politics and the example of clarity, intelligence, political morality given by President Havel is already too much long: there is no need at all somebody else would further make it longer.
