MOSSOVIET: RADICAL DEMONSTRATION TO DEFEND LEGITIMATE ELECTIVE REPRESENTATIVE LEGISLATIVE BODY IN FRONT OF MOSCOW CITY SOVIET

(Moscow, 3 June, 1991) - Members of Radical Party living in Moscow made today a demonstration in front of Moscow City Soviet under slogans: "We support legitimate elective representative bodies", "Hands off from Mossoviet!", "Democracy is not extra-ordinary full-power", "One authoritarism must not be changed with another one", "Radical Party defends Mossoviet today in Moscow, Rome and Budapest". Demonstrators used also blue with yellow stars flag of European Community. The demonstration lasted one hour.

In the press communication extended by Radicals before the demonstration they stated:

"The leadership of the Democratic Russia Movement (DRM) and, first of all, one of the leaders of this movement Gavriil Popov, today's president of Moscow Soviet, continue and intensify campaign against Mossoviet. This campaign is called to liquidate or, at least, to reduce dimension and functions of Mossoviet to absolutely symbolical level.

The DRM leaders successfully used the Soviets as springboard for acquiring the positions of power during and after the elections the last year. Now they made in fact an agreement with C.P.S.U. apparatus about division of power. Not the last importance haves in this question the intention to promote and ensure privatization of municipal property to the advantage of the nomenclature - both old and new.

In this situation more or less democratically elected Soviets doesn't satisfy the highest ranks of the democratic movement and becomes a target for attacks from side of G.Popov, S.Stankevich and other representatives of new ruling class. <...> That's why exactly we organize the demonstration to defend Moscow City Soviet."
