(Moldavia, July 10, 1991) - Law on civilian alternative service for conscientious objectors was introduced in Moldavian Republic of the USSR by the Parliament of Moldavia. Statute of conscientious objector according the law will be granted for conscripts who object military service on grounds of pacifist, religious or political believes. They will perform their civil duty in municipal services, agriculture, in health and social protection, in fire protection crews and in crews of urgent aid during disasters.
In the current time Moldavia is the fifth Soviet Republic which proclaimed the right to conscientious objection on its territory (together with Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Georgia). Virtually laws on civilian alternative service are implemented in practice in Latvia and Estonia. However, the USSR legislation does not provide any civilian alternative to military service yet, certain republican laws are considered illegal officially by Moscow and conscripts who follow them are liable for criminal responsibility.
