Dear Sir;
We have just learned that Aleksandr Julievich Pronozin has been committed to a mental hospital for examination, as part of the investigation on charges of refusing military service laid against him earlier this year.
We wish to object strongly to this and ask that he be released, and that the charges against him be dropped.
The right to conscientious objection to military service is recognized by the United Nations as a basic human right. It is neither a sign of mental instability, nor a criminal offense.
Aleksandr Pronozin should be permitted to perform some alternate, non-military service, rather than serving in the armed forces. We know him to be a principled young man strongly committed to non-violence and anti-militarism.
Thank you for your attention. We hope to hear from you soon.
