INTERVIEW BY NIKOLAJ KHRAMOV IN KIEV NEWSPAPER MOLODA UKRAJINA

(Kiev, 10 April, 1992) - The information political Ukrainian newspaper Moloda Ukrajina (Young Ukraine) presented today a photo report about Radical Party's demonstration against death penalty in front of the residence of Ukrainian president in Kiev at 31 March.

Hereby the short interview which was given by Nikolaj Khramov - Radical activist from Moscow working now in Ukraine, - to UM correspondent Dmitro Jacuk before the beginning of the First Ukrainian Conference of the Radical Party (29 February, Kiev Tourist Hotel) is published. Below is the text of the interview as it was published in the paper.

---------------------------------------------------------

- Nikolaj, which stratums of society is Radical Party supported by?

- Not for a concrete stratum. We would like people sharing our views. In the party are students and workers, businessman and housewifes. We are interesting for one's ideas, but not for his social situation.

- What do you think, will your party find in Ukraine the wide support among the population?

- I hope, yes. It depends from us and from which problems will we work for: Chernobyl, alternative civilian service... However we are not "a mass party", we are only 140 in Ukraine now, but we don't aspire to become "a mass party".

- What is the uniting factor for your party?

- Shortly, we are members of a transnational, democratic, liberal democratic, liberal socialist, over-confessional transparty. We are standing for nonviolence, for the new, democratic federal Europe. We are against any authoritarism, parto- and bureaucracy, militarism, clericalism and nationalism.

- Who can join the party?

- Everybody. It's enough, simply to pay membership fee. The membership is valid for one year, then you can join for the next year. If you don't want, you may go out without any problems. One can join and go out so much times as he wants. Nobody can be expelled from the party, for any reason.

- What Radical Party demands from its members?

- We are not an ideological party. As every party we have our own program of activity, among its priorities are: struggle for human rights, against death penalty, for right to object military service, for United States of Europe, for legalization of drugs, problems of environment. A person can support not obligatory all the aims, but only one, for example. It's enough for us.

- Nikolaj, one tells that you accept money of CPSU-KGB, another - masons' money. And what about truth?

- It's passion and disease, to seek everywhere for KGB, masons and CIA. We are a poor party. In fact many of our activities here are financing by money of members in Western countries. Because all the fees of Ukrainian members (25 roubles each) could not cover expenses for organizing of this conference.

- I know that you are conscientious objector. How you was punished for it?

- I objected military service in 1984, but was taken by force and delivered into the army unit. Four months I was detained in various military hospitals, then I was released "because of medical reasons" (bad sight). But when I came back to Moscow, I knew that I was released because of Amnesty International urgent action campaign. <...>
