MEMORANDUN FROM: DIRECTORIO REVOLUCIONARIO DEMOCRATICO CUBANO
TO: RADICAL PARTY
1. - Yndamiro Restano sentenced to 10 years, Maria Elena Aparicio to 6, both leaders of Non-violent Social Democratico Harmony Movement (Movimiento Armonia). Restano's movement had apparently recruited members in the armed forces and bureaucratic apparatus. The trial did not go well for gov't. Several state witnesses refused to testify against Restano, said they were pressured by state security, including a LT. colonel in the army.
2. - Trials have been held for dissident leaders Luis Pita Santos, Jose Luis Pujol and others. Gov't is in a rush to try and sentence dissident activists.
3. - On May 20, 1992 the very active opposition movement known as the Marti Youth Organization (Organizacion Juvenil Martiana) called for a peaceful Pro-Democracy demonstration in Havana's Maceo parks.
The organization's two key leaders were arrested the day after they called for the demonstration. Still, more than 400 police officers were mobilized in the park to deter demonstrators. Several dozen people still showed up but were forced to leave.
4. - The gov't is apparently trying to create a "Loyal Opposition" within the island, using pro-gov't intellectuals such as Lisandro Otero while the true opposition in incarcerated or exiled.
5. - It is vital to continue to support the civil action movement within Cuba. We must continue ahead with the steps we planned. We will send more information as developments accelerate.
