UKRAINE: RADICAL MEMBERS ON THE FIRST CONGRESS OF NOVA UKRAINA MOVEMENT. THE ABOLITIONIST DOCUMENT ON DEATH PENALTY IS ADOPTED BY THE CONGRESS.

(Kiev, 28 June, 1992) - The First Congress of Nova Ukraina (New Ukraine) Movement took place since 26 till 28 of June in Puscino-Vodica suburb of Kiev, in the forest hotel complex, which belonged before to Central Committee of Communist Party. This movement unites five Ukrainian political parties (Party for Democratic Revival, Social Democratic Party, United Social Democratic Party, Liberal Democratic Party and Constitutional Democratic Party) together with some organizations of privat businessmen. Nova Ukraina is in fact (and it was confirmed on the Congress by special motion) a sort of "third force" in this former Soviet republic, being a Liberal Democratic and Social Democratic alternative both to post-Communist government and to nationalist opposition, presented by Rukh Movement, Ukrainian Republican Party and some right-wing nationalist groups.

At the last day of Congress, Radical activists organized in the foyet of the congress hall an agitation table with materials of the Radical Party. They collected 73 signatures under petition for the abolishing of death penalty (the general number of Congress' participants was about 280), distributed about 200 copies of The New Party paper. Two new members joined Radical Party.

The special declaration, which urges to begin immediately the process of removing death penalty from Ukrainian legislation and proposes to state the moratorium on death sentences and executions as the first step on this way, was prepared by Nikolaj Khramov and presented by Vladimir Moskovka, Jurij Zbitnev (both are deputies of Ukrainian parliament and members of Radical Party's Federal Council), Vladimir Grinev (vice president of Ukrainian parliament), Vitalij Kononov (leader of the Green Party) and 31 other participants of the Congress. This declaration was adopted by voting as an official document of the Congress.
