UKRAINE: PUBLIC ASSEMBLY OF RADICAL PARTY IN LVOV

(Lvov, May 1, 1993) - The public assembly of the Radical Party has taken place in the hall of the LVOV regional society for defence of monuments of culture. It was the first Radical reunion in Lvov since 1989 when first members have joined the Transnational Radical Party in Ukraine.

The assembly was opened by Myhajlo Batig, deputy of Ukrainian parliament from Lvov. He was one of the first who have signed the Radical appeal for abolishing death penalty in Ukraine. His intervention was dedicated exactly to the problem of death penalty. Mr Batig commemorated the words of Gandhi: "There are a lot of ideas which is possible to give own life for, but doesn't exist any idea which could legalize taking life from another human being". Oleg Vvedenskij, coordinator of Lvov group of Amnesty International, has also spoke about campaign against death penalty.

Andrea Tamburi, member of General Council of the Radical Party, has shared about results of the XXXVI Congress of the party and great success of membership campaign which was achieved in Italy. He has also detailed political proposals of Radical Party concerning reform of international law and UN, in particularly - Radical campaign for establishing the UN tribune on military crimes, which responsibility has to be distributed not only on the territory of ex-Yugoslavia but also to all the others current or prospective war and conflicts.

One of the basic questions debated on the assembly of Lvov Radicals, was situation in the hot zones in the countries of ex-USSR. It was underlined the deep simile between aggressive rasist policy of Belgrade and actions of Russian national bolshevist forces of revenge, which are in solidarity with Serbian regime and govern in the Russian Supreme Soviet, inspiring and supporting separatist forces in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and other neighboring states. This idea was stated in the interventions by Vladimir Ivanov, Radical militant from Kiev, by Nikolaj Hramov, member of General Council of the RP, by Oleg Neveljuk, political analyst from Lvov, by Sergej Dmitrovslij, a free lance journalist from Lvov. "These forces are of extraordinary danger not only for Ukraine and other new independent states, but also for the whole international society, they threat peace and stability in the world. If United Nations, CSCE, European Community, NATO will keep silence by the same shameful way also in this time - war in Yugos

lavia will seam the boys' game on the street in comparison with the possible events on the territory of former Soviet empire." - has told Oleg Neveljuk.

The big attention of the assembly was payed also to the antiprohibitionism of drugs - the subject especially important in Lvov, where situation concerning drag use and drug traffic is maybe the most dramatic in the whole country.

In the public assembly have taken part about 70 persons not only from Lvov but also from Stryj and other Galician cities. There were presented camera group of Lvov TV, correspondents of regional radio and newspapers. During the meeting 17 new members have joined Radical Party for 1993.
